Sampling Biases

These biases mean your sample doesn't look like the population you're trying to understand. No amount of good question design fixes a bad sample.

1. Selection Bias

What it is: Your method of choosing respondents systematically includes or excludes certain groups.

How it works: Every sampling method has blind spots. Email surveys miss people without email. In-app surveys miss people who've stopped using the app. Social media recruitment skews toward younger, more-online demographics.

Example: A university surveys alumni about career outcomes by emailing graduates who updated their contact information. Graduates who moved frequently, changed names, or disengaged from the university never receive the survey. The sample over-represents alumni who maintain university ties, likely those with positive feelings about the institution and stable careers.

2. Non-Response Bias

Example: An e-commerce company sends a post-purchase satisfaction survey. Response rate: 22%. The "satisfaction" data systematically under-represents negative experiences.

3. Survivorship Bias

What it is: Your sample only includes people who "survived" to be surveyed, excluding those who dropped out, left, or failed.

How it works: You survey current customers, current employees, current students (the survivors). Everyone who churned, quit, or dropped out is invisible. The survivors have systematically different experiences.

Example: A SaaS product surveys users after 90 days. Average satisfaction: 8.2/10. But 45% of users churned within the first 30 days and never saw the survey. The 8.2 doesn't describe "user satisfaction." It describes "satisfaction among users who stayed for 90 days." Very different claims.

Detection signals:

  • You can only survey people who are still around
  • Satisfaction or engagement scores seem unrealistically high
  • No mechanism exists to capture feedback from departed respondents

How to reduce it: Build feedback collection into the exit process (exit surveys, churn surveys). Survey at multiple points in the lifecycle, not just the endpoint. Report results with clear scope: "among retained users" rather than "among users."

Instrument Biases

These biases come from the survey itself: how questions are written, ordered, and structured.

4. Question Wording Bias

What it is: The specific words in a question push responses in a predictable direction.

How it works: Every word carries connotations. "Welfare" and "assistance to the poor" describe the same policy but trigger different responses. "How satisfied" presumes some satisfaction. "Don't you think" pressures agreement.

Example: Two versions of the same question:

  • "How effective is our customer support team?" → Mean rating: 4.1/5
  • "How would you rate your experience with our customer support?" → Mean rating: 3.6/5

The word "effective" primes positive evaluation. "Rate your experience" is neutral.

Detection signals:

  • Split-test different wordings and see divergent results
  • Results diverge from behavioral data (high "satisfaction" but high churn)
  • Questions contain evaluative language (excellent, problematic, innovative)

5. Order Effects

What it is: The position of a question or answer option in the survey systematically influences responses.

How it works: Two mechanisms:

  • Primacy effect: Respondents favor options presented first (common in visual surveys). They start reading from the top and commit to the first acceptable option.
  • Context priming: Earlier questions frame how later questions are interpreted. Asking about specific features before overall satisfaction inflates overall scores because features are top-of-mind.

Example: A political survey asks about healthcare policy before asking about government priorities. Healthcare ranks as a top priority at 67%. The same survey with healthcare policy questions at the end: healthcare ranks as a top priority at 49%. The earlier questions primed respondents to weight healthcare more heavily.

Detection signals:

  • First answer options selected disproportionately often
  • Results change when you reorder questions (test this with randomization)
  • Context-sensitive questions produce different results depending on what precedes them

6. Scale Design Bias

What it is: The structure of your response scale systematically tilts results.

How it works: Scales are not neutral measurement tools. A 5-point scale with three positive labels and one negative label (Poor / Fair / Good / Very Good / Excellent) inflates positive responses. Scales without a midpoint force people with no opinion to pick a side. Numbered scales (1-10) produce different distributions than labeled scales (Very Bad to Very Good).

Example: An employee survey uses this satisfaction scale:

  • Very Dissatisfied
  • Dissatisfied

These biases come from how respondents process and answer questions, regardless of how well the questions are written.

7. Social Desirability Bias

What it is: Respondents give answers that make them look good rather than answers that are true.

How it works: People want to appear competent, ethical, healthy, and successful. On topics where there's a "right" answer (exercise, recycling, voting, reading) or a stigmatized answer (discrimination, substance use, prejudice), respondents systematically over-report desirable behaviors and under-report undesirable ones.

Example: Self-reported voter turnout in surveys consistently exceeds actual turnout by 10-20 percentage points. People claim to vote because not voting is socially undesirable. This isn't conscious lying; it's motivated recall: they remember intending to vote more vividly than they remember not voting.

Detection signals:

  • Self-reported behavior diverges from objective data
  • Sensitive questions have suspiciously positive distributions
  • Anonymity increases variance (people answer differently when anonymous)

How to reduce it: Guarantee and emphasize anonymity. Use indirect questioning for sensitive topics ("How common do you think it is for people to..." instead of "Do you..."). 8. Acquiescence Bias

What it is: The tendency to agree with statements regardless of content.

How it works: Agreeing is cognitively easier than disagreeing. It requires less thought, less conflict, and less effort. On agree/disagree scales, this produces a systematic upward tilt: everything gets more agreement than it deserves.

Example: A workplace culture survey includes:

  • "Management communicates well" → 71% agree
  • "There are communication gaps in management" → 64% agree

Both can't be true. Acquiescence bias inflates agreement with both statements. The data tells you more about response style than about actual communication quality.

Detection signals:

  • High agreement rates across contradictory statements
  • Low variance in responses (everything clustered at "agree")
  • Reverse-coded items don't behave as expected

9. Satisficing

What it is: Respondents give "good enough" answers rather than accurate ones: the minimum effort needed to complete the survey.

How it works: Careful survey responses require cognitive effort: reading the question, retrieving relevant information, mapping it to the scale, and selecting the best option. When respondents are tired, bored, or unmotivated, they take shortcuts. They pick the first acceptable option, straight-line through grids, or select the midpoint for everything.

Example: A 40-question survey shows high-quality responses for the first 15 questions and then progressively more satisficing behavior: straight-lining grid questions, shorter open-ended answers, faster completion per question. By question 35, the data is essentially noise.

Detection signals:

  • Straight-lining in grid/matrix questions (same answer for every row)
  • Completion times that are impossibly fast
  • Open-ended responses that are blank, single-word, or off-topic
  • Response quality declines as survey progresses

10. Recall Bias

What it is: Respondents can't accurately remember past behaviors, experiences, or attitudes.

How it works: Memory is reconstructive, not reproductive. When you ask "How many times did you visit our website last month?", respondents don't retrieve a precise count. They estimate, and those estimates are systematically biased toward recent events, emotionally significant events, and round numbers.

Example: A health survey asks "How many alcoholic drinks did you consume last week?" Respondents underestimate by 40-60% compared to diary studies where they log drinks daily. They forget the beer with lunch, the glass of wine while cooking, the drink at the office event.

Detection signals:

  • Responses cluster at round numbers (0, 5, 10, 20)
  • Self-reported frequencies don't match behavioral data
  • Results differ dramatically between "last week" and "typical week" framings

How to reduce it: Ask about shorter time periods ("last 7 days" rather than "last month"). Ask about specific, concrete behaviors rather than abstract frequencies. Use aided recall (provide reference points or categories). Accept that retrospective data has inherent imprecision; don't report it with false precision.

Administration Biases

These biases come from how the survey is delivered, not what it asks.

11. Mode Effects

What it is: The survey delivery method (online, phone, paper, in-person) systematically affects responses.

How it works: Different modes create different psychological contexts. Online surveys feel more anonymous: people are more honest about sensitive topics. Phone surveys introduce interviewer presence: people give more socially desirable answers. Paper surveys reduce technology barriers but limit question complexity.

Example: A health insurance company measures member satisfaction via phone and online. Phone surveys average 4.2/5. Online surveys average 3.7/5. Same population, same questions, different results. The phone introduces social pressure to be polite; the screen doesn't.

Detection signals:

  • Results differ across modes for the same population
  • Sensitive questions show larger mode differences than neutral ones
  • One mode has systematically higher (or lower) scores

12. Interviewer Effects

What it is: The interviewer's presence, characteristics, or behavior influence how respondents answer.

How it works: This primarily affects phone and in-person surveys. The interviewer's gender, race, age, tone, and reactions all cue respondents about expected answers. An interviewer who nods and says "mm-hmm" at positive responses trains respondents to give positive answers.

Example: A study on racial attitudes finds that respondents express less prejudice when the interviewer is of a different race than when the interviewer shares their race. The interviewer's presence changes what respondents are willing to say.

Detection signals:

  • Results vary systematically across interviewers
  • Sensitive topic responses correlate with interviewer characteristics
  • One interviewer consistently gets more positive (or negative) results

How to Diagnose Bias in Your Data

You can't always prevent bias, but you can detect it. Here are practical diagnostic approaches:

Compare Against External Data

If you have behavioral data (purchase records, usage logs, HR data), compare it to survey responses. Systematic divergence between self-report and behavioral data signals bias, usually social desirability or recall bias.

Analyze Non-Response

Look at who didn't respond, not just who did. If non-respondents are systematically different (different demographics, different behaviors, different segments), your results are biased by their absence.

Check for Internal Consistency

Include pairs of questions that should correlate (or that should contradict, if reverse-coded). If respondents agree with "Management communicates well" and also agree with "There are significant communication gaps," you have an acquiescence problem.

Look at Response Time

Questions answered in under 2 seconds per item aren't being read. Surveys completed in 1/3 of the median time are being rushed. These are satisficing signals that suggest the data is noise, not signal.

Split-Test Question Variants

When possible, randomly assign respondents to different question wordings, scale formats, or question orders. If results differ significantly, you've found instrument bias.
