Filtering
Narrow results by status and date.
Open Filters in the analytics header to choose response statuses or a date range. Start by choosing the view that answers your question: Overview describes collection, while Questions summarises answers. They do not use every filter in the same way.
- Open or close the Filters panel.
- Choose the response statuses to include.
- Set From and To when you need a date range.
How the views differ
| View | Response statuses | Date range uses |
|---|---|---|
| Overview | All statuses; selecting a status does not change its totals | Response start date |
| Questions | Completed by default, or the statuses you select | Completion date |
| Export | Completed only; its own date controls | Completion date |
A person who starts on Monday and finishes on Tuesday belongs to Monday's Overview start count and Tuesday's completed-answer results. That difference is expected even when both views use the same calendar dates.
Inspect completed answers
Open Questions with no status selection to use the completed-only default. Add a date range if you need completions from a particular period. Before comparing two questions, use the same status and date selection for both.
The number of answers can still differ: an optional question can be blank, and a branch can prevent someone from seeing a question at all. A filter chooses responses; it does not make every response contain an answer to every question.
Investigate unfinished responses
Select In progress, Started or Abandoned in the status filter to include those statuses. Choose the statuses you actually need rather than assuming completed responses remain selected. Clear the date range when inspecting unfinished answers: those responses have no completion date.
Clearing every status selection returns Questions to the completed-only default. It does not mean “include all statuses.” To compare unfinished and completed answers, explicitly select both.
Example: why 120 starts do not produce 120 rows
Suppose Overview shows 120 starts and 107 completions. Questions initially summarises the completed responses, and an unfiltered export contains those 107 completed responses. If only 80 of those respondents saw an optional follow-up and 70 answered it, its answer count can be 70.
These numbers describe different things: starts, completions, exposure to a question and supplied answers. Check the route and required settings before treating a lower question count as missing data.
When a filter seems to do nothing
Check which view you are using. Status selection does not change Overview totals. For an empty Questions view, check the chosen statuses and remove the date range while investigating unfinished responses. For an unexpected export, inspect the export dialog's separate dates.
