Building surveys

Required questions

Make an answer mandatory before someone can continue.

A required question needs a valid answer before a respondent can continue past it. Optional questions may be left unanswered.

Select the question

Open its Content tab and find Validation.

Turn on Required

In the list editor, the asterisk button on a hovered question offers the same shortcut.

Test the empty answer

Open Preview and select Next without answering. Check that the error is understandable, then enter a valid answer and continue.
  1. Open the Content tab for the selected question.
  2. Turn Required on or off under Validation.
  3. In list mode, the asterisk on the question is a shortcut to the same setting.
Local example with fictional survey content.

Required does not replace format validation: a supplied email, number or date must still be valid. A required question skipped by the survey's logic is not shown just to collect its answer.

For multi-part questions, test the whole response, including any enabled follow-up. NPS exposes a Follow-up Required setting, but its reason is not currently enforced by answer validation. Yes/No’s Must Be True is also not enforced. See the NPS and Yes/No guides. Start and Content acknowledgement checkboxes have their own required settings, which require a checked acknowledgement.
