Resuming a response

How someone picks up where they left off.

A respondent can return to an unfinished response using the same survey link in the same browser. Lensym uses a browser cookie to recognise that response, with a seven-day resume window. The cookie identifies the saved session; it is not a portable link to all of the person's answers.

Continue an unfinished survey

Use the same browser

Open the original survey link on the device and browser used to start. Keep the same browser profile and its cookies.

Check the restored position

Review the answers and position that were saved before leaving. Text entered immediately before closing or losing connection may not have been saved.

Continue to the end

Finish the remaining questions and confirm that the thank-you screen appears. An unfinished session is not a completed response.

This applies to a real response collected through the survey link. Preview keeps answers temporarily for testing and does not create a saved respondent session.

When returning starts a new response

ChangeWhy the earlier response may not be recognised
Different device or browserThe original resume cookie is not there
Different browser profileProfiles keep separate cookies
Cookies cleared or blockedThe session identifier is unavailable
Private browsing session closedThat session's cookies may have been removed
Resume window expiredThe saved browser access is no longer valid

A survey link is not a personal resume link

Copying the public survey URL to another browser does not transfer the original browser's session. Keep using the original browser when possible.

Resuming versus retaking

Resuming continues unfinished work. A retake link is issued for a specific response and can allow that response to be corrected. Do not assume reopening the public survey link will let someone edit an already completed submission.

If a respondent cannot resume, check whether they switched browsers, cleared cookies or encountered a saving problem. Survey owners can inspect the stored response in Analytics → Responses before deciding whether a retake link is appropriate. Avoid promising recovery of answers that never reached the server.
