Building surveys
Sections
Group related questions together.
A section groups related questions and content into one part of the survey. It can have its own title and description.
Add the section
Choose + → Section Node and give the group a meaningful title.Put questions inside
Drag a question into an empty section. Once it has children, drop beside a child to choose the position within that section.Preview the group
Check the instructions, question order and required answers together. Use sections where the questions naturally belong on the same part of the survey.Sections cannot be nested
A section holds questions and content, but not another section. To start a new group, add another section at the top level.
Copying a section includes its children. A Go To rule must target the section itself rather than a question inside it. See Go To and Skip.
When to use a section
A section is useful when people should read related questions together: for example, three short questions about one workshop activity with shared instructions above them. Its children appear within the same section screen, so check the whole group in Preview.
Keep the section title about the common topic and use individual question titles for the specific answers you need. Repeating the full instructions in every child question can make the group harder to scan. If a group is long, split it into several top-level sections or leave some questions as separate steps.
Plan branching around the group
To send someone into the group, choose the section as the Go To destination. Do not use the first child as a substitute destination. Review the flow again if you move a question into or out of the section: its place in the respondent experience has changed.
When you duplicate a section, inspect the copied questions and any branches or pipes that refer to them. Similar titles can make it easy to select the original question when you meant the copy.
Test the group as a whole
Preview the section at a narrow screen width and scroll through all of its questions. Leave one required child unanswered to check the validation experience, then supply the answer and continue. Also test optional blanks and any instructions that depend on an earlier answer.
