Conditional logic

Conditions and operators

Every way to test an answer.

A condition tests an answer. Choose the current or an earlier question, choose an operator, then choose the value to compare with when the operator needs one. The result is either a match or no match; combine several results with ALL or ANY.

Choose a comparison that fits the answer

What you want to checkExample conditionWhat to test
A particular choiceField is EconomicsEconomics and another option
More than a thresholdProject count is greater than 21, 2 and 3
A phrase within textComments contains workshopText with and without that exact spelling
An optional answer was omittedComments is emptyBlank and non-blank answers
Any answer was suppliedComments is not emptyBlank and non-blank answers

“Greater than 2” excludes 2. Use “greater than or equal to” when the boundary itself should match; that operator is available in Expert mode. For a range, combine a lower-bound and an upper-bound check in an ALL group.

Pick options rather than retyping labels

For choice questions, ratings and scales, the comparison control offers the configured answers where supported. Choose from that list. The rule keeps a reference to the underlying option, not just the words displayed to respondents.

For a checkbox answer, is → Research methods means Research methods is among the selections. It still matches when Data analysis is selected too. It does not mean “Research methods was the only selection.” Ranking membership likewise does not identify the first-ranked item; use ranking extractors when displaying a particular position.

Empty answers need an explicit check

No comparison value is needed

is empty and is not empty test whether an answer exists. Zero and a Yes/No answer of No are answers, not empty values.

An ordinary comparison, including is not, does not match a missing answer. If an optional question should take the same route when blank or when it has a particular value, make an ANY group with separate checks for those cases.

Text matching is literal

Text comparisons are case-sensitive. “Workshop” and “workshop” are different, and contains checks for a piece of text rather than interpreting the respondent's meaning. Free-text wording varies; a choice question is usually easier to route reliably when there are a few known options.

Preview a matching answer, a non-matching answer and any relevant boundary or blank case. If the route is unexpected, check the selected question and value before changing the action. See logic troubleshooting.
