Piping

Pipe complex answers

Use selected items, ranking positions, rows and follow-up answers.

Some answers contain several pieces of information. Insert a question into the field editor, select its variable pill, then choose the part that belongs in your sentence or calculation.

Ranking: use the top choice

Ask respondents to rank workshop topics. In a later content block, insert that ranking and select Top-ranked item. A sentence such as “We will send more about …” can then use their first choice.

  1. Select the variable pill to configure the part of its answer to insert.
  2. Pipe selects the part of the answer, such as the top-ranked item.
  3. Field chooses the label or an available option attribute.
Local documentation example.

Item at position starts at 1. Rank of item returns a number, so it can be used in an expression. For example, an item ranked first has rank 1, not 0. Choose an item's attribute when you need its code instead of the displayed label.

Reference examples

These examples show the syntax; the picker supplies the real IDs for your survey.

{{v:topics.top}}
{{v:topics.itemAt[2]}}
{{v:topics.rank[data_analysis]}}
{{v:interests.count}}
{{v:experience.value[instructions]}}
{{v:aspects.column[speed]}}
{{v:topics.top.attr[topic_code]}}

Square brackets usually identify a particular option, statement, row, column or attribute. They are stable IDs, not the visible wording; itemAt[2] is the exception because it uses a position.

Before you publish

Test an answer that supplies the selected part and one that does not. A follow-up can be blank, an optional Matrix row may be unanswered, and a skipped question cannot supply a new answer. Check fallback handling and keep numeric values separate from labels.
